Womens soccer in Europe has been on the rise in recent times as evident in the UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) this season. The competition is at the round of 32 stage and the big names of womens soccer in Europe have booked their place in the next round of the competition. The likes of Manchester City, Paris Saint Germain (PSG), Bayern Munich and Chelsea have all progressed into the last 16 of the competition as they showed why they are the leading teams in womens soccer in Europe.
Manchester City are through to the last 16 of this season’s UEFA Champions League after beating Goteborg of Sweden 3-0 in their second leg meeting through goals from Lauren Hemp and Georgia Stanway. Hemp gave her team a first half lead before Stanway added a second half brace to make the result more comprehensive for her team.
Manchester City secured their place in the last 16 with the 5-1 aggregate win over their Swedish opponents having won the first leg 2-1 in Sweden. Chelsea are also through to the next stage of the UEFA Women’s Champions League with the 8-0 thumping of Portuguese club Benficaover two legs. They had won the first leg 5-0 in Portugal before Bethany England and Sam Kerr scored to propel the Blues to a 3-0 win at home in the second leg of their last 32 clash. Bethany scored the first and last goal of the game either side of the interval.
French giants PSG are also through to the last 16 of the competition after the 8-1 aggregate victory over GornikLeczna. PSG beat their Polish opponents 6-1 at home in the second leg clash played on Wednesday. Bayern Munich have booked their place in the last 32 following the 6-1 aggregate win over Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam. The Germans won the second leg 3-0 at home. The pick of the other qualifiers include Barcelona, Lyon, Fiorentina, Atletico Madrid and VFL Wolfsburg.
