from a UK point of view, i think the problem with US soccer is that it’s not played into the teen years. You always see on tv shows or films the parents taking their kids to play soccer, and apparently its a massive sport amongst kids, its when they hit 13-14 they find american football, basketball etc, and if they got their kids carrying on with soccer (football) i honestly think they would dominate the sport, because of the sheer size of the country.
i think there’s too many other sports in america for footie to properly kick off.. when youve got huge things like baseball basketball and american football its so difficult for other sports to grow. its different in england cause football is really the only big sport, and always has been
I really hope soccer in the U.S grows, i think if you get the resources and support behind, then America could produce fatastic players. Just imagine what the MLS would be like if it had the grass roots dedication of Basketball from school, highschool and college level. Coming from an Irish Soccer(Football) fan, whatever you wan’t to call it.
Because you skate in Hockey.
How indeed . . .
only a few countries dive. not so much usa/can. basketball players dive alot.
if americans like violence…why are there so many hockey haters?
I love Ray too, but he’s not the best commentator for newbies. With him its all melodrama and over-exaggeration. I like it too, but it doesn’t help the newbies UNDERSTAND what they’re watching.
True….I cringe every time I see a player dive or fake an injury….which inherently is something that Americans are told NEVER to do….never show fear, never show pain, etc. The USMNT used to be more like that which I loved, but now you see more and more of the antics that are common in other countries which is frustrating. I’ve got an idea that could rid the soccer world of that crap, perhaps I’ll save that for another vid 🙂
And also because Americans prefer violence over skill.
Add the fact that soccer isn’t the same as before. More players dive, giving it a bad perception.
Fair point. But remember, that rage/dislike against soccer in America is mostly because it isn’t understood….we humans we always fear and hate what we don’t understand. The more efforts that are taken to help people understand the sport, the less haters one is likely to encounter.
Not really :S Considering that USA has baseball and basketball the Euros and Latinos know more about soccer since it practically dominates 99% of Mexico and below while three sports struggle to gain fans.
It also depends on the perspective on the American fan. If he accepts soccer, he’ll watch it and tell his buds about it. If he’s an ignorant guy, he’ll hate it and slander it, thus affecting the growth of soccer in the States. Not even Canada is that harsh.
All kidings aside he has a lil point
Ray Hudson is my fav commentator. So stfu noobs. Go play the sport you fat azz people
Did anyone hear the commentary on fsc’s coverage of fulhum v everton fa cup game? I almost died laughing that day
I’ll take this one…First of all, since the sport is ingrained into the culture, you have babies plopped in front of a TV with soccer playing….they learn HOW to learn about soccer from TV, while we don’t. They also don’t really need to use the TV to learn soccer because more people play and media is inundated. Either way, I would argue that the average Euro/Latino soccer fan knows less about soccer than the average USA football fan knows about football. Its true for me!
NBC’s coverage of Rugby (7s and World Cup) was ‘instructional’ at times. It is possible that carries over to their MLS coverage for new viewers. It seems they know they have to stand out and provide a better experience from ESPN and Fox. Heck, they are featuring soccer in their own promos for NBC Sports.
The reason is because they are a soccer culture and we are not, so to attract new fans we have to find ways to grow the game.
Ray Hudson magisterially masturbating every time he sees some Messi magic has got to be against the law, right?
get me as a color commenater, i rock
I listen to a lot of soccer commentary in spanish and it’s the same even there across all the nations that speak spanish. It’s relatively rare….if they mention anything pass the basics it’s based on tactical formations and not individual skill or technique.
i have a question why dose it work in other parts of the world (normal commentary) but not in the us?
Good comments, man. Thanks.
His NFL example is true. They consistently reinforce knowledge and point out how the play developed. I have to do the same thing when watching soccer with non-fans, otherwise, they’ll never understand why people enjoy this sport. I’ve made more fans by explaining what is happening on the pitch.
Oh well, hopefully someone in TV land is listening…God I hope someone is lol
The man is right. It’s the only way to get Americans involved with understanding the sport. It’s not dumbing it down- they’re already doing it by stating the obvious during the replays.
And, the soccer world banter information is completely useless to the fans watching, or the new viewer. We’ve already read about 99% of the stuff they use for small talk, listening to it again is pointless.
