US Soccer needs to really pay tribute to this guy. To this day we have not been able to replace him. Michael Bradley is the closest thing (A box to box midfielder) but still not quite as polished or elegant on the ball as Johnny O. US Soccer needs to keep legends like John, Earnie Stewart, Brian McBride, Claudio Reyna as visible figures in the landscape of US Soccer. The younger generations can only benefit by having these guys to learn from and look up to.
Nice to see at least one video about O’Brien. He definitely deserves a tribute, thought it’s short one. Great player.
Johnny O’Brien…you’re a legend! Every US Soccer fan has great memories of you, especially in the 2002 World Cup.
He had alot of injuries, but most players would still kill for a career as accomplished as John’s. US Soccer moved forward a lot during his time as a player. And, as a fan, you can’t really ask for any more than that.
I even heard rumors that the Irish national team tried to steal him from us! The Irish are notorious for poaching good players, so that should tell you something.
“ he would have been one of the best in the world.”
LOL oh your serious?
what do you guys mean by saying his made of glass. you guys are full of shit i bet if you play with him like i did you won’t be able to pass him he is made of steel. every players get injuries. his just happened to be a career ender.
its is really cool because i’ve played indoor soccer with o’brien twice here in L.A. such a great player,he is very skillful and has some sick move i hope i could learn more from him. and progress as a soccer player.
such a great player. he wouldnt have just been the best american player ever, he would have been one of the best in the world.
Wow. What a talent. U.S. Soccer misses you, John O’Brien.
Once a Ajacied, allways a Ajacied!
You’re allways welcome in Amsterdam.
Greetings from a Ajax supporter.
O’Brien wasn’t necessarily made of glass. His injuries were all related to issues from when he was growing. I know he had very bad knee/hip issues growing up, like a lot of adolescent boys. His injuries weren’t the result typically of being hurt in games, but physical limitations imposed by his health. Though he had a short career, he’s by far the best the USA has had, in vision, on the ball composure, movement, and creativity. Name me anyone better…
i have an john obrien ajax jersey. he was made of glass otherwise he would be playing center midfield for the usa and widely considered our best player ever. what a shame!
This guys was a great player when he was healthy. Landon called him the best player the USA has ever produced. That may not be true anymore but it was when he said it. O’Brien was great on the ball, and had incredible vision. At one point FC Barcelona had interest in him. It’s a damn shame the boy is made of glass, otherwise he could have had a more illustrious career. I’ll never forget him though, one of my prized possessions is a John O’Brien USA jersey.
